- Organisational Structure
The Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) through its Fisheries Division is considered the lead agency responsible for the administrative control of aquaculture. This is due primarily to the nature of aquaculture dealing with marine and aquatic organisms. The Department is generally responsible for both research and development of fisheries initiatives which include aquaculture which includes support to any private sector initiatives, and traditional responsibilities in management of any fisheries related development to avoid or reduce any potential impact on the environment and biodiversity. The latter’s responsibilities have been lessened to some degree with the establishment of an Environment Department which is responsible for the environment, and conservation in general of natural resources. The identified constraints and perceived limited potential for aquaculture development in Niue has meant that aquaculture is covered in general under Fisheries and does not have a dedicated Division or Officer responsible for this area
