The National Fisheries Authority was established under the Fisheries Management Act 1998. Its sole responsibility is the management and development of fisheries in Papua New Guinea. Aquaculture is one of the main activities of NFA within the Inland and Aquaculture Section under supervision of the Fisheries Management. Research, development and promotion is currently the focus of the section especially with freshwater aquaculture in conjunction with the National Department of Agriculture and Livestock aquaculture stations.

Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) :

The national Department of Agriculture and Livestock promotes agricultural and aquaculture development. The National DAL aquaculture research facility was recently established at the Erap Research Development Centre. The research and development is focused on freshwater aquaculture.

Many provincial governments also have provincial Departments of Agriculture and Livestock. The most important provincial DAL aquaculture centre is the Highlands Aquaculture Development Centre (HAQDEC) in Aiyura which is operated by the Eastern Highlands government.
