Body: The goal of this workshop will be to examine the management and fisheries of giant clams and identify national and regional initiatives that will ensure the long term ecological, social and economic sustainability of this important resource. Due to the fact that most of the countries in the region are either relatively new members to CITES or non-Party States, this workshop will also give a chance to improve regional awareness about the Convention, its structure and processes. The workshop objectives are to: - Strengthen regional capacity for the implementation of CITES by Parties in the region; - Review the status and distribution of wild populations of giant clams in the region; - Review the global and regional trade in giant clams; - Assess requirements of non-detrimental findings and the Review of Significant Trade Process of CITES as well as issues related to other relevant international agreements; - Explore possible methodologies for establishing conversion factors by which trade in meat (kilograms) can be converted into numbers of animals; - Evaluate available resource assessment techniques to ensure sustainability of wild fisheries; - Assess the global and regional trends of clam mariculture in terms of markets and production systems; - Identify further opportunities for aquaculture; - Determine base requirements for national management plans and regional cooperation on the management of sustainable fisheries for Tridacnidae; - Identify priorities for research, development and training.
