  • Giant clam

Tonga_seaweed_b1In 2001, Vanuatu Fisheries Department (VFD) carried out a first successful spawning and rearing of T. crocea in its land-based hatchery. More than 100 pieces valuing in excess of VT 100,000 were sold life to aquarium operators.

In 2005, Reef Life conducted its first successful spawning of T. crocea with over 3 million eggs collected and settled in land-based tanks. There is a potential to engage communities into giant clam farming but there would be a need in hatchery production of juveniles for this to be feasible.
