Pearl oyster research and trials has been carried out by the Ministry of Fisheries. Spat collection trials have revealed the feasibility of reliance of wild spat for pearl farming operations. Successful pearl pearl harvests have occurred.
There are currently about a half dozen farms in operation in Fiji. Most pearl farms are located around Savusavu bay in Vanua Levu island.
