Aquaculture of exotic specie Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) has been mastered by the mid 90s. The existing production (10 tonnes) is not totally adapted to the local market.
The potential of the local market and the short-term possibilities to develop aquaculture of local species of finfish has been studied. A new program of R&D has been developed by SPE at the Ifremer centre of Vairao, focusing on two species:
Moi (Polydactylus sexfilis) and Paraha peue (Platax orbicularis). The results obtained until now has confirmed the aquaculture centre potential of those two species. SPE and Ifremer are now completing the work for mastering
