Milkfish

Kiribati government with assistance from Japan operate a milkfish project at Temwaiku on Tarawa atoll. The milkfish farm is targeting live baitfish for the tuna industry and for food fish for the community. It also integrate farming with chicken and pig which are being sold locally. Approximately 80 hectares of pond area is being utilized for the project. Production of milkfish reported for up to October, 2006 was 11.5 mt.

For the past years, Ambo Aquaculture has been continually delivering live fries to milkfish farmers on Tarawa. Up and to this point, approximately more than fifteen thousand fries have been delivered to farmers for grow-out in their ponds. There is expanding demand for milkfish fry.
