Trochus

As part of the sea cucumber project, trochus broodstock were introduced to Kiribati from Fiji in order to spawn them and reseed the reef with juveniles. The breeding of trochus has been successful and to date, there are approximately 8,000 reared juveniles (young) of trochus released in Marakei, Tarawa and Abaiang outer reefs.

Future plan include nourishing non-lagoon islands of Kiribati with this program and then proceeded with lagoon islands. At this stage, experiments are still being carried out on the better habitat, measures against potential predators and reseeding/releasing techniques.
