Résumé : À l’occasion du tout premier atelier sur l’aquaculture de chanidés aux Fijis, le village isolé de Vitawa a eu l’honneur d’accueillir des participants  venus de dix pays de la région océanienne. 

Les objectifs de l’atelier visaient à transférer, par un apprentissage participatif, des techniques pratiques et peu coûteuses d’élevage de chanidés Chanos chanos (yawa en fidjien). 

Les objectifs pédagogiques de l’atelier étaient les suivants : 

1. comprendre le contexte dans lequel se déroule le projet pilote de Vitawa,

2. connaître la biologie des chanidés,

3. apprendre à produire des chanidés,

4. faire le bilan de la pisciculture communautaire.

Title: Capture-based Aquaculture of Milkfish Chanos chanos in the Pacific Islands

Abstract: The hosting of regional participants, representing ten countries from around the Pacific in the remote village of Vitawa, for the first ever Milkfish Farming Workshop to be held in Fiji, marks a milestone achievement. 

The broad aim of this Workshop was to provide participatory learning opportunities in practical techniques for low-cost aquaculture of milkfish Chanos chanos (yawa in Fijian) by people who are currently, or will soon be, engaged in low-cost milkfish farming projects in the Pacific. 

The specific objectives were to:

1.     understand the background of the Vitawa Pilot Project

2.     know about Milkfish biology 

3.     learn how to produce Milkfish

4.     learn lessons about community based fish farming

Abstract: On 17–20 May 2010, the Regional Workshop on Trade in Corals and Determining Non-detrimental Findings was held to identify issues with regard to the trade in corals (and other marine species), but also to assist Pacific Island countries and territories to comply with important elements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), particularly with regard to conducting non-detriment findings.

Title: Proceedings of the Tahiti Aquaculture Conference

Abstract: In December 2010, 190 people from the aquaculture sectors gathered in Tahiti to attend the Tahiti aquaculture Conference. The Conference was a was a follow up of two tropical island aquaculture events, the Mayotte Aquaculture Meeting held in 2008 for the French Overseas Departments and Territories by French Overseas Aquaculturalists Union (UAOM), and the Marine Finfish Farming Workshop held at SPC for the Pacific Islands Countries and Territories (PICTs) in 2007.


 

This report is a compilation of 38 presentations that were made during the event under the following broad themes:

  • Hatchery-based Aquaculture (marine fish mostly),
  • Shrimp aquaculture,
  • Capture-based Aquaculture,
  • Economic contribution of aquaculture in small island environment
  • Aquatic animal health and biosecurity
  • Governance in aquaculture.

Other resourceful information is also available throughout the report such as:
