  • Penaeid prawn

fiji_prawnpond_s1The penaeid prawn industry is relatively small compared to the freshwater shrimp production. The main species being cultured is Peneaus monodon. In the past post larvae have been imported.

Hatchery production is carried out at the Fisheries department Galoa prawn hatchery.

The main concern is to get good quality broodstock. Fiji is examining the potential to be a source of specific pathogen free broodstock for Penaeus monodon.

A large prawn farm targeting Litopenaeus stylirostris has been established at Navua.
